What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications to create a calm and relaxed state. It helps take the edge off of dental care, providing safe and comfortable care. Sedation dentistry is especially beneficial for the following:
- Children with fear or anxiety about dental procedures
- Children with past traumatic dental experiences
- Children with heightened tooth sensitivity or a strong gag reflex
- Children with multiple decayed teeth or those requiring complex treatments
- Children with special healthcare or behavioral needs
- Children who are unable to sit still for long
What Are the Different Sedation Dentistry Options?
We offer several sedation dentistry options to meet the unique needs and comfort levels of our young patients, including the following:
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Nitrous oxide sedation involves breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask placed on the nose. Your child should feel calm and relaxed but will remain awake and responsive to directions. The effects of laughing gas wear off soon after treatment, allowing your child to resume normal activities with minimal interruption.
Oral Conscious Sedation: This form of sedation involves taking oral medication before treatment to help your child relax. Your little one may feel sleepy but will stay awake and responsive to treatment. Oral conscious sedation can reduce the sensation of pain, providing a more comfortable and positive dental care experience. It is ideal for children who experience higher levels of anxiety.
IV Sedation: IV Sedation involves administering medications intravenously, with immediate effects. Your child will feel drowsy and will likely fall asleep but will remain conscious and responsive to treatment. Our highly experienced team will closely monitor your child while adhering to the highest safety standards. Most children have no recollection of their appointment, providing for a more positive dental care experience.
Hospital-Based General Anesthesia: General anesthesia is often recommended for patients requiring extensive dental treatment or those who cannot be treated safely in a traditional dental office setting. It is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist with extensive experience working with children. Your child will be in deep sleep and have no memory of their treatment, providing a safe and positive experience.
